Well what I thought was a diaper rash turned out to be a yeast infection. Poor baby! With every change I would cringe my face. It looked red, patchy, and so very painful. She seemed to be handling it better than I was. I just wanted to cry for her.
I’m a very natural kind of gal and wanted to try all the home remedies first, before I had to do anything over the counter. First I tried calendula, and it just did not do anything for her bum. After the application, she was just a little oily down there. I washed her bottom with water at every change, and it seemed to help. During her nightly baths, I put some distilled white vinegar, and I couldn’t visually see anything immediately, but it’s said to stop the yeast from thriving (she smelled like vinegar too!). I also left her bottom half naked, so that it could air dry, and that seemed to help a lot. Moreover, with every cloth change (she wears cloth diapers), I put plain soy yogurt on her bum because it’s said to kill off the yeast.
I use the Seventh Generation Baby laundry detergent, and don’t think the detergent is causing anything. However, if I don’t see a change in her bottom in the next couple days, I will boil her cloth diapers in hot water and vinegar. It’s definitely trial and error. No two bums are alike. I just have to see what works for my baby and run with it, when that one remedy works!
Update this morning: After doing vinegar baths and putting soy yogurt on her bottom, she is 99% clear of the redness and her yeast infection! I literally started the treatment yesterday and it worked so quickly. It is recommended to do the home remedy 3-4 more days after the yeast infection disappears. I am super excited and happy!
